Midyear Spotify Wrapped Check In
It’s June. We’re getting to halfway through the year. The shortest day of the year is fast approaching as I’m writing this post. I figured this is a good time to check in what my music habits are looking at. Since I use Spotify, I don’t get the same sort of stats that an Apple Music user apparently gets so I found a site that could give me the stats I wanted - Top Artists and Top Songs. These statistics were taken a 6pm June 5, 2024.
Top Artists
This one is a little hard to guess. Unlike previous years, I haven’t really listened to albums of artists. Taylor Swift is the only artist in my 2023 Wrapped that has released a new album this year with THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT: THE ANTHOLOGY. Meanwhile, Noah Kahan released Stick Season (Forever) which is the extended extended verison of his album Stick Season. 5 Seconds of Summer from the looks of things are on hiatus as a group with Luke Hemmings releasing his EP boy and Ashton Irwin set to release his second solo album Blood on the Drums in July. AJR is currently on tour (PLEASE ANNOUCE NZ DATES SOON. I’LL EVEN SETTLE FOR AUSTRALIA RIGHT NOW). And I know that Fall Out Boy who rounded out my top 5 artists last year won’t make it this year.
I got to upfront - I looked at my top songs first, so I’m basing my guesses on that. I’ve got six that I think are going be right up there.
Dylan - I’ve loved her recent singles a lot a lot. Taylor Swift - She released a double album that is 2 hours and 2 minutes long which I basically listened to non stop for like a week. Maisie Peters - I really loved The Good Witch and have several of her songs scattered on various playlists. The Beaches - Really loved Blame My Ex and much like Maisie Peters, their songs are on various playlists on mine. MOTHICA - she’s releasing a full visual album later this year and has a fairly unique release schedule of releasing a single and music video every three weeks in the lead up. The Score - for the first time in years, The Score did not make it into the top 5 artists but this year they’re coming back with a vengence and have released four singles since December.
TOP FIVE
1. Taylor Swift
2. Noah Kahan
3. The Score
4. 5 Seconds of Summer
5. MOTHICA
If these five are the five that end up on my 2024 Wrapped I would be happy. I think these five artists give a fairly accurate representation of my music tastes.
TOP TEN
6. Alec Benjamin
7. Maisie Peters
8. Dylan
9. The Beaches
10. The Aces
Out of these artists, the only one I hope doesn’t make it into the top 5 at the end of the year is Alec Benjamin.
TOP TWENTY
11. Knox
12. Blanks
13. Friday Pilots Club
14. MUNA
15. Tate McRae
16. KAYKO
17. AJR
18. R5
19. Jorge Rivera-Herrans
20. Luke Hemmings
Yeah, these make sense to be in the mix, but I would be really shocked if they ended up in the top five.
Top Songs
1. Vampire Disco – Friday Pilots Club
2. Deep End – The Score
3. Poison Ivy – Chaz Cardigan
4. HEARTBREAK ON ANTIDEPRESSANTS – DON’T MAKE THIS WEIRD
5. Too Sweet – Hozier
6. Liar Liar (Feat. Bastille) – Dylan, Bastille
7. Down With The Wolves – The Score, 2WEI
8. Night Shift – Smallpools
9. Magic – Will Linley
10. Coming Of Age – Maisie Peters
11. Blame Brett – The Beaches
12. The Radio – ZEE MACHINE
13. She Likes a Boy – Nxdia
14. My Phone is Trying to Kill Me – The Aces
15. The Alibi – Dylan
16. History of Man – Maisie Peters
17. Rebel Child – Dylan
18. Bourgeoisises – Conan Gray
19. Messier – Tate McRae
20. Edge of the Earth – The Beaches
Not at all surprised that these are the songs on the top twenty. They either are on my rotational playlist or on my high specific vibe playlist or both. Vampire Disco will likely make it into the top five songs at the end of the year. I really really like that song. As to where top artists from last year land - Noah Kahan’s Paul Revere is at #25, 5 Seconds of Summer with Red Desert is at #23 and Taylor Swift appears at #39 with Suburban Legends.
I’m Gonna Make Some Assumptions
Here’s what I think will happen at the end of the year - the five artists at the top will likely stay there. I could only really see The Beaches or AJR maybe making it. The Beaches because I’ve got their songs every where and AJR if they come on tour to New Zealand or Australia.
I think that my listening minutes will be fairly similar to last years if not a bit more. I’m still falling asleep to music most nights. Also work is very very slow at the moment meaning if I’m not yapping with my coworkers about how bored we are I’m listening to music or podcasts.
In the meantime, while we await 2024 Wrapped, here’s the playlist I was listening to while I was writing this post.
